The Edrington Group’s results for the 12 months ended 31st March, 2011

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Group turnover UP 18.2% at £553.4m (2010: £468.3m)
Profit before tax (excluding exceptional items) UP 19.3% to £141.5m (2010: £118.6m)
Shareholders’ earnings (excluding exceptional items) UP 20.1% to £65.0m (2010: £54.1m)
Dividend UP 16.1% to 27p (2010: 23.25p)

The Famous Grouse grows by 4% with premium expressions contributing 8% growth
The Macallan grows by 14% to over 700,000 cases
Brugal consolidates position as number one rum in Spain and grows into other markets
Cutty Sark adds one million cases of sales to the Group in first full year of ownership
Highland Park grows by 9%

ROUTE TO MARKET

China and Hong Kong distribution companies become part of the Group. Edrington directly controls eight distribution companies.

CORPORATE

William A. Robertson formed a partnership with John W. Baxter in 1861 to create the business that would evolve into the present day Edrington Group. 150 years later the Group has 2,300 employees mostly based overseas.

Commenting on the results, Ian Curle, chief executive, said today:
The Group continues to make good progress and we have further improved Edrington’s strategic position and business performance during 2010/11.

The strategic position of the Group was enhanced with the acquisition of the Cutty Sark brand and by taking ownership of the Maxxium distribution companies in China and Hong Kong.

Our strong financial performance was supported by brand growth, increased earnings and improved cash flow.

Profit before tax (pre-exceptionals) of £141.5m has grown by 19% in the current year and by 95% over the last three years (from £72.6m).
Shareholders’ earnings (pre-exceptionals) have grown similarly, by 20% in the current year and by 76% over the last three years. This is prior to exceptional earnings, which further enhance these figures.

Brand growth has been driven by increased investment and improved economic conditions in many of our markets. We have continued to invest behind our premium brands despite the difficult trading conditions in mature markets in recent years. This investment is now paying off as we see stability returning to many western markets. In the current year we have experienced growth in the USA and UK, however, this has been offset by declines in Greece and Spain.

In Asia our business has continued to grow steadily and we are experiencing positive developments in Russia and a number of emerging territories.

During the year we made significant investments in our operational assets in both Scotland and the Dominican Republic. We also continued to lay down substantial whisky stocks to enable the long term growth of our brands.

Strategy
Our strategy is focussed on the long term development of Edrington and it can be summarised as follows:

§ Invest in our premium spirits portfolio:
- Our premium spirits portfolio comprises The Macallan, The Famous Grouse, Brugal, Cutty Sark and Highland Park. Investment is targeted on brand equity growth and is focussed in the markets where we anticipate the greatest opportunity for long term growth. Brand initiatives are focussed strongly on the consumer and sustained with programmes that innovate within our categories.
§ Invest and develop our Route to Market:
- We operate a number of Route to Market models, depending on the best fit for our brands in each marketplace. In recent years, we have increased the number of markets where we have full ownership, however, joint ventures and third party arrangements still play an important part of our Route to Market model.
§ Invest in our people and align our resources to support our brand growth.
- With the addition of Hong Kong and China we now employ over 2,300 people worldwide. This has increased the talent available to Edrington and provides us with an opportunity to future growth. A consequence of the international development of The Group is that our operating model has become more decentralised leading to more of our key decisions makers being located in our key markets.

Brands
The Famous Grouse brand grew by 4% during the year with the premium expressions contributing 8% growth. The Black Grouse continued to spearhead the brand’s premium development with sales growth of 21%.
The overall strong performance was driven by brand share growth in the UK and resilient performances in the USA and major European markets. Although at an early stage of development, the brand continues to make progress in emerging markets, with Russia a notable highlight.

The Macallan continues its impressive performance on all fronts. Our leading luxury malt whisky brand grew by 14%, selling over 700,000 cases. This growth has been achieved at premium prices as we continue to invest behind the brand. Asian markets represent over 50% of brand sales and our rate of growth in the USA market has increased as the economy improves. The brand has been supported with the launch of premium expressions, including the third Lalique crystal decanter and the Masters of Photography Edition featuring the world renowned photographer Albert Watson.

The Brugal brand consolidated its position as the number one rum in Spain during the year and increased its availability in other international markets. Sales also grew in the Dominican Republic with an increase in popularity of the Brugal Blanco expression.

The premium position of the brand was enhanced by the repackaging of the entire range for domestic and international markets. A new communication platform is being launched as we increase the investment behind the brand and drive for growth in the USA and other international markets.

The acquisition of Cutty Sark added a further one million case brand to our premium spirits portfolio and strengthened our distribution presence in southern Europe and the USA.

The acquisition was earnings positive in the first year allowing further investment behind the brand this year as we reveal new packaging and introduce the brand to new markets.

The Highland Park brand grew its contribution by 9% as we continue to invest behind the brand. The renowned quality of this whisky is matched by the range of awards it receives. We remain committed to growing the premium range of the brand which was enhanced by the launch of the 50 year old this year.

Route to Market
The strategic position of the Group has improved with further investment in Route to Market. On 1st April, 2011 we took ownership of the Maxxium distribution companies in China and Hong Kong. Asia has been an area of significant growth for Edrington over the last number of years and we now own distribution companies in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. The business operates from a regional office in Shanghai and we now employ over 280 people in Asia.

This decentralised approach has been extended to the Nordics where we now manage Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and Austria from our Stockholm office. The Nordic markets are of particular importance to The Famous Grouse and Highland Park where they represent 14% and 13% of contribution respectively.

The Group is currently in the process of opening a regional office in New York to support brand growth in America. The primary focus is the North American premium spirits market where our brands have significant potential and the market continues to grow. The team will also oversee South America and identify opportunities for the development of our brands as this region continues to enjoy economic growth.

Edrington’s regional offices now include Shanghai, New York, Madrid, Stockholm and Santo Domingo.

The ongoing success and growth of the Group is due to the talent and endeavour of our employees. SOLSTICE AND HORIZON - TWO NEW WINTER WARMERS FROM BENRIACH

IT'S the winter solstice today (December 21), so it's serendipitous that BenRiach is launching two exciting new products bearing these inspirational names.

Launched on the shortest day of the year, BenRiach Solstice, with its connotations of re-birth and celebration, is a perfect malt for the midwinter, a 15 year-old heavily-peated port while BenRiach Horizons is a 12 year-old triple-distilled malt - a new and original product line which has never been done before by BenRiach.

The bottling strength for both 70cl bottles is 50%. Both are cased in a rigid gift box and a limited quantity is available worldwide.

Marketing Manager Kerry White explained: "These are two incredibly exciting new products to be savoured on cold winter nights.

"Unusually for a Speyside distillery, we distil whisky from both styles of malted barley, non-peated and peated, enabling us to capture the defining taste and aroma of peat reek in a few special bottlings.

"BenRiach Solstice is one such expression. Distilled from heavily-peated malted barley, the whisky has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in Aged Tawny Port pipes sourced from Portugal's Douro region. The overall maturation period, across both styles of wood, is a minimum of 15 years.

"Horizons, the 12 year-old triple-distilled BenRiach, is one of the most unique whiskies to be released by the distillery. Traditionally, most single malt whiskies are distilled twice, but during the late 1990s BenRiach experimented with some limited production runs of triple-distilled whisky, and we have allowed the whisky to mature for a minimum of 12 years before giving you the opportunity to sample the fruits of our labour."

Kerry added: "Triple-distilled means the raw spirit produced comes off the still at a higher alcohol strength, and the whisky is more fruity and floral than a traditional double-distilled BenRiach - quite different in character, and certainly a rarity amongst single malt whiskies.

"Originally matured in ex-bourbon barrels, the triple-distilled BenRiach has been allowed to finish in Oloroso Sherry casks, and has derived a number of distinctive flavours and aromas specific to the sherry casks."

The first sign of frost has been sighted on the island! Time to get those log fires burning and wrap up warm. As we edge into winter there's one new arrival we're all very excited about: the release of the new Jura 21 year old limited edition whisky created to commemorate 200 years of the Jura Distillery.
To tell you the truth, Jura and whisky have been together since way before the distillery first opened in 1810. However, the distillery as we all know and love today, was re built by two local estate owners Robin Fletcher and Riley-Smith along with distillery architect Delme-Evans in the year 1963 bringing new life and hope to the island. And that is why we're celebrating 1810 with a limited edition 21 year old malt finished in an original cask from 1963! Two memorable years, one exceptional malt. And what a malt it is!
The unique vintage 1963 Oloroso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass have done their bit to create a rich and full-bodied masterpiece. Now if you ask me, this would make an ideal collectors item, but I like to drink my whisky so I hope you will too and think fondly of Jura while you enjoy a dram of this wonderful spirit. Willie T (the other Willie as he's sometimes known) has put together his very own tasting video which covers everything you need to know about the malt and its history. You can view it here.
We want you to be a part of this special occasion and should you get your hands on a bottle of our beloved 21 year old then I'll invite you to come over and meet the team. Erste limitierte Abfüllung in dieser Reihe. Gereift in Fässern aus amerikanischer und europäischer Eiche. Ein süßer, ausgewogener und erstaunlich raffinierter Dessert-Whisky. Leicht, aber dennoch vollmundig mit angenehm sahniger Konsistenz im Mund, den hohen Alkoholgehalt gleicht eine angenehme Süße aus. Glänzend-dunkle Goldfarbe, dünne Perlenkette, zarte Viskosität. Robin Laing kommt ins Angels Share!Wir freuen uns, am Freitag, 29. Oktober, Robin Laing – den berühmtesten schottischen Barden nach Robert Burns ... – zu einem Überraschungsbesuch bei uns begrüssen zu dürfen.Robin wird uns seine Stories erzählen und uns mit Songs über Whisky, Destillerien und Schottland unterhalten. Es wird sicher – wie bei seinem letzten Besuch vor zirka drei Jahren bei uns – ein stimmungs- und humorvoller Anlass.Robin Laing wird an diesem Abend sicher auch wieder den Song "The Devil Uisge Beatha", vortragen. Der Titel bedeutet nach seiner Interpretation in etwa "The Devil In Disguise" oder der "Wolf im Schafspelz"... Gemeint ist damit natürlich der Whisky – der schottische natürlich – welcher sein beliebtestes und am meisten besungenes Thema ist. Aber irgendwie trifft dieser Songtitel auch auf Robin Laing selbst zu. Bei ihm verbirgt sich nämlich hinter einer verschmitzt lächelnden und sich seriös gebenden Persönlichkeit ein unterhaltsam in dunkle Abgründe führender schottischer Liedermacher. Er besingt in vielen Liedern den Whisky in all seinen Arten und vor allem seinen Auswirkungen. Daneben trägt er von ihm gesammelte oder selbst verfasste "Spooky Stories" vor: Geistergeschichten, in denen es nur so wimmelt von Vampiren und ähnlich unangenehmen Akteuren. So zwischendurch erzählt er aber sicher auch einmal eine entspannende Geschichte ... Robin Laing ist ein Singer/Songwriter und Erzähler der besonderen Art. Mit einem jungenhaften Lächeln in den Mundwinkeln gelingt es Robin, zu leichter Gitarrenbegleitung Texte vorzutragen, die es in sich haben: von bitterböse bis äusserst humorvoll.Hörproben gefällig? Bearing in mind whisky is the single most wonderful thing in the world; I am often surprised how little media coverage it receives. Have a Sunday newspaper delivered to your house and you’ll soon drown in supplements devoted to the trivia that dominates everyday life – motoring, sport, travel, work, television...

Where, I ask you, is the single malt Scotch whisky section? Those of us with a thirst for whisky knowledge have to seek it elsewhere. Recently I’ve shared my enthusiasm for Whisky Magazine, the Scotchblog and others with you. Now it is time for Malt Advocate magazine.

Published quarterly, Malt Advocate is the USA’s leading whisky magazine and covers all of the world’s finest whiskies including Scotch (single malt and blends), Irish whiskey, bourbon, American, Japanese and Canadian whisky. It mixes whisky features, columns, product reviews and up-to-date whisky news. Malt Advocate’s contributors include whisky authorities such as Michael Jackson and Gary Regan as well as the magazine’s editor and publisher - John Hansell, a vastly experienced whisky writer.

Malt Advocate is open and honest with its opinions and has always been very positive about the whiskies emanating from Highland Park. For example, our 30-year-old was the magazine’s Import Whisky of the Year in 2005. As John said; “An exemplary Highland Park… Whiskies like this one remind me why I fell in love with whisky in the first place.” – who are we to argue.

Malt Advocate also organises an excellent series of informal whisky tasting events in New York, Chicago and San Francisco called WhiskyFest – the next one of these will be in San Francisco on October 23rd followed by New York on the 30th October – they are great fun and well attended. Bruichladdich Links is a series of limited edition bottlings chosen by whisky guru Jim McEwan, celebrating Scotland’s two principle passions: Golf and Whisky.
A links course is natural, un-manicured, challenging where the weather and coastal location exert a strong influence. These are strong associations with Bruichladdich
The latest in the Bruichladdich Links series features the Carnoustie links course,
home of the 2007 British Open championship played on a public links course.
Located 6 miles east of Dundee at the mouth of the Firth of Tay, golf has been played over Carnoustie’s North Sea coast links since 1527
The 6th in the Bruichladdich Links series features Graeme Baxter’s panoramic painting of the par 4 15th hole, where the infamous Barry Burn flows.
Carnoustie’s final three holes are recognized as golf’s toughest finishing stretch as Jean Van de Velde found out when he discovering the burn cost him the 1999 championship.
Matured for 14years in Quercus Alba oak Bourbon casks we gave it an additional cask evolution in exquisite French Allier oak from possible the finest chateau in the world.
To date, all the Links series have been bottled deliberately at 14 years providing an interesting comparison of cask types and ACE influences.
Naturally bottled on Islay with out chill-filtration, colouring-free, and reduced from cask to bottling strength with the legendary Islay spring water.

Bruichladdich Links “K Club”

The 7th in the Links series of limited release Bruichladdich bottlings is now available

Bruichladdich Links is a series of limited edition single malts created by whisky guru Jim McEwan, celebrating Scotland’s two principle passions: Golf and Whisky.

The K Club is considered to be Ireland’s finest course, located outside the village of Straffan in Kildare, 15 miles south west of Dublin.

Designed by Arnold Palmer, the par 5, 16th hole is featured in a painting by leading golf course artist Graeme Baxter.
The whisky was matured for 14 years in Quercus Alba Bourbon casks with additional cask evolution (ACE) in Guigal's French casks from Cotes Rotie and Hermitage.

“To date, all the Links series have been bottled deliberately at the same age to provide an intriguing comparison of the various ACE influences - cask types and oak origins.”
The whisky is naturally bottled on Islay with out chill-filtration, colouring-free, and reduced from cask to bottling strength of 46% with the legendary Islay spring water.
This bottling is limited to a worldwide release of 12,000 numbered bottles. Previous releases are St. Andrews, Augusta, Turnberry, Troon, Hoylake and Carnoustie.

Liebe Whiskyfreunde

Wie Sie sicher schon bemerkt haben, gibt es jährlich unzählige Anlässe wie Whisky-Seminare und Whisky-Dinner.

Ich selber, leidenschaftlicher Whisky-Kenner, habe mir etliche solcher Anlässe zu Gemüte geführt und feststellen müssen, dass in erster Linie fast ausschliesslich ein Verkaufsgedanke von Seiten des Organisators im Vordergrund stand und nicht unbedingt die Absicht, dem Konsumenten etwas Neues zu bieten.

Wir möchten dies gerne ändern. Dazu bestehen bereits Ideen von gezielten Themen-Degustationen oder Themen-Seminaren, alle zum Thema Whisky, im Raume Bern und Umgebng. Dazu möchten wir auch namhafte Referenten aus dem Ausland einladen.

Um diese Ideen umsetzen zu können, braucht es dazu eine Interessengemeinschaft, wir brauchen also Ihre Unterstützung!

Falls Sie sich von dieser Idee angesprochen fühlen, oder in Ihrem Bekanntenkreis jemanden kennen, der sich für diese Idee begeistern liesse, dann teilen Sie uns dies doch kurz in einem Mail unter info@stillman.ch mit. Liebe Freunde

Wie bereits angekündigt wird am kommenden Samstag, 16. Juni, der neue Shop des Angels Share so richtig eröffnet!

Der neue Shop ist grösser und übersichtlicher geworden und lädt auch zum Plauschen, Fachsimpeln und Geniessen ein.

Nicht nur das Sortiment an Whiskys wurde erweitert, nein, auch das Cigarren-Angebot wurde stark ausgebaut.

Der neue Shop des Angels Share ist so noch mehr zu einem Treffpunkt für Geniesser geworden.

Was läuft so an diesem Tag?

Am Morgen um 9 Uhr werden der Shop und das Restaurant geöffnet.

Weit über 100 Whisky- und Whiskey-Abfüllungen stehen im Restaurant zur Degustation bereit. Gegen einen dem Alter und Ruf des betreffenden Whisk(e)ys angepassten (niedrigen) Unkostenbeitrag kann nach Herzenslust getastet (versucht) und mit Kollegen und anderen Whisk(e)y-Enthusiasten gefachsimpelt werden. Es ist ja bekannt: Degustationen und Ausschank von Spirituosen dürfen nach Gesetz nur gegen Bezahlung und nur an über 18jährige erfolgen (Alkoholgesetzgebung).

Im Shop werden an diesem Tag ein paar ausgewählte Whisky-Abfüllungen zu speziell günstigen Preisen zu haben sein. Dazu gibt es auf das ganze Sortiment von James MacArthur, dem von uns in der Schweiz exklusiv vertretenen unabhängigen Abfüller, am Eröffnungstag 10 Prozent Rabatt. (Angebote gelten nur im Laden, nicht im Internet).

Im Laufe des Vor- und Nachmittags werden wir von Zeit zu Zeit mit Dudelsack-Klängen verwöhnt werden. Bei schönem Wetter wird auf dem Platz vor dem Shop und Restaurant aufgespielt, bei schlechtem Wetter im Restaurant – wir rechnen natürlich fest mit schönem Wetter.

Höhepunkte des Tages werden aber die Auftritte von Robin Laing – dem berühmtesten schottischen Barden nach Robert Burns . . . – sein.

Er wird so ungefähr um 11 Uhr am Vormittag und zirka um 14 und 16.15 am Nachmittag im Restaurant seine Auftritte haben.

Wir freuen uns auch, die bis jetzt teuerste und älteste Abfüllung der Kult-Destillerie Ardbeg, den

Ardbeg 1965, The Envy of the Islay, 40 Jahre

im Original in seiner extrem aufwändigen Erscheinung präsentieren zu können! Diese Abfüllung kann aber weder gekauft noch degustiert werden . . .

Das ganze Angels Share ist mit in die Eröffnung mit einbezogen! Das Restaurant (beim Sitzen geniesst sich's besser) richtet sich (auch mit schottischen Spezialitäten) auf Euren Besuch ein.

Es wird sicher ein runder Tag mit vielen Gelegenheiten, andere Freunde von Whisk(e)ys und Cigars zu treffen, zu diskutieren und zu geniessen.

Für genügend Parkplätze vor, neben und hinter dem Haus ist gesorgt. Auch unsere Nachbarn stellen uns Parkplätze zur Verfügung. Und die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel (die Regionalbahn in diesem Fall) bringt Euch ab dem Bahnhof Aarau bis zur Haltestelle Uerkebrücke auf 300 m in unsere Nähe!

Having just returned from the beautiful isle where the sun shone brightly on both the Fells Race and Whisky Festival alike, I'm taking a moment to write and tell you that our website has been updated and includes lots of recent goings on. Author Will Self has been out staying at the lodge penning his new opus, we've been out promoting our fine spirit in New York City and been busy helping our friends across in Crinan organise the first classic yacht festival of its type that's coming to Jura next month. There's a few special new whiskies available too that are worth a look.

Das www.whisky-news.com läufte Forum nicht so gut. Es hat ein paar Probleme gegeben und war mit der Struktur nicht ganz zufrieden. Deshalb habe ich ein Blog gemacht.
Hoffentlich wird es besser klappen, als das alte Forum.
